Say hello to your friends on your clear landline phone, because The Baby-Sitters Club is officially back in action for a second season.

Netflix announced the renewal Wednesday in an adorable video with all the stars singing along to the iconic theme song and adding in their own lyrics to say, "And we're getting a season 2." The new season will premiere in 2021 and bring back showrunner Rachel Shukert and executive producer Lucia Aniello, with Lucy Kitada and Michael De Luca also serving as executive producers and original series author Ann M. Martin as a producer.

The single-camera show, based on the best-selling book series, debuted in July and follows the friendship and adventures of Kristy Thomas (Sophie Grace), Mary Anne Spier (Malia Baker), Claudia Kishi (Momona Tamada), Stacey McGill (Shay Rudolph), Dawn Schafer (Xochitl Gomez), Jessie Ramsey (Anais Lee), and Mallory Pike (Vivian Watson) as the middle-schoolers start their babysitting business in the town of Stoneybrook, Conn.

A Guide to the Exciting New Anime Coming to Netflix

Netflix’s anime output and viewership has been steadily growing over the past few years. You can binge a number of classic series like Seven Deadly Sins and Fairy Tail; the site has also begun acquiring and producing brand new anime series. During their Netflix Anime Festival 2020, the streamer revealed a series of radical anime coming to screens in 2021. We’ve picked eight of the shows that we’re most excited about to highlight here. There’s a great range of genre, tone, and story that will likely excite lifelong anime lovers and new fans alike.

The Way of the Househusband

Netflix

What it’s about: Tatsu was once the most feared Yakuza in Japan. Now he’s retired, hopeful to become a househusband for his darling wife. The manga largely centers on Tatsu’s struggle to leave behind his life of crime, as well as his delightful escapades into home care, cooking, and running errands. This series will likely expand on the comic strip style of Kosuke Oono’s manga, which is one of the best series of the last few years.

Who’s behind it: Chiaki Kon, director of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal the Movie, helms the new series.

You’ll like this if you like…: Cooking anime, crime anime, romance anime… this is a smorgasbord of genres and humor. Food Wars fans will immediately love this one.

Godzilla Singular Point

What it’s about: Following the Godzilla anime trilogy, Netflix is offering another animated collaboration with Toei. This time the story goes for a more classical take: two young engineers team up to take on “an unprecedented threat.” The new Kaiju designs are really interesting; they seem to veer closer to dinosaurs than traditional giant-sized monsters.

Who’s behind it: Atsushi Takahashi (assistant director on Spirited Away) directs. Toh Enjoe, author of Self-Reference ENGINE, will write and compose the series. Character designs come from Kazue Kato (creator of the Blue Exorcist manga), with kaiju designs from Eiji Yamamori, the key animator for several Miyazaki movies.

Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure

What it’s about: The stunning stop motion anime Rilakkuma and Kaoru is one of the loveliest Netflix originals ever. This series takes those delightful characters and throws them into a day at the theme park that’s about to close down. The first series mixed cute visuals and cutting edge animation with thoughtful, mature themes and existential humor. We hope to see more of that here!

Who’s behind it: Rilakkuma and Kaoru‘s Masahito Kobayashi returns to direct the new series.

You’ll like this if you like…: Slice of life stories, stop-motion, and of course Netflix’s Rilakkuma and Kaoru.

Pacific Rim: The Black

Netflix

What it’s about: Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim is an all-out monster mash. After the underrated sequel, this anime series is aiming to expand the world even more. When Kaiju take over Australia the whole continent has to be evacuated. The only people left behind are two twins who have to restore an old Jager in order to survive. Sounds like some classic mecha anime setup to us.

Who’s behind it: Craig Kyle (screenwriter for Thor: Ragnarok) runs the show with Greg Johnson.

You’ll like this if you like…: Pacific Rim (naturally) and Voltron.

Yasuke

Netflix

What it’s about: This series stars Lakeith Stanfield as real life Black samurai Yasuke. The African retainer served under the legendary Oda Nobunaga. But this version will offer up a Lone Wolf and Cub-style twist on his tale, with Yasuke transporting “a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords.”

Who’s behind it: Directed and created by LeSean Thomas, who has worked on Black Dynamite and The Boondocks. Character designs come from Takeshi Koike, director of three Lupin the Third projects and a segment of The Animatrix.

You’ll like this if you like…: Lone Wolf and Cub, Ninja Scroll, and Afro Samurai.

RESIDENT EVIL: Infinite Darkness

What it’s about: This CG series is the newest addition to Netflix and Capcom’s collaboration. As you can see from the newly released image, this is a fully computer animated show. Focusing on the classic horror game series, Infinite Darkness will pick up after Resident Evil: Vendetta.

Who’s behind it: Capcom and Quebico… otherwise details are scarce.

You’ll like this if you like…: Other than Resident Evil itself—Castlevania, and horror in general.

Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy – EARTHRISE

What it’s about: Netflix’s first addition to the Transformers canon introduced a shocking backstory for the car-shaped aliens. That series follows the Autobots and Decepticons as they fight for survival on Cybertron. This second entry will be a direct sequel to the first chapter, with the Decepticons left on the dying planet and the Autobots looking for a new home.

Who’s behind it: F.J. DeSanto (of Transformers: Titans Return) and Matt Murray (Transformers: Power of the Primes) team up for this new chapter.

You’ll like this if you like…: Gundam and Bubblegum Crisis.

Spriggan

What it’s about: This classic manga and anime was huge in the ’80s and ’90s, and now it’s back. Spriggan centers on a world where an ancient race was destroyed by the mysterious tech they created. To save future generations, they leave cryptic messages explaining why their tech should be forgotten. Instead, humans seek out the artifacts in order to harness their power. The Spriggans aim to stop them.

Who’s behind it: Spriggan enlists Hiroshi Kobayashi, director and animator on Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan, to direct. Hiroshi Seko (The Empire of Corpses) composes and writes the series. Character designs come from Shuhei Handa (Sword Art Online).

You’ll like this if you like…: Akira, Appleseed, and any classic hero saving the day.

Netflix delivers joy in the form of a season 2 renewal for The Baby-Sitters Club

Per Variety, Netflix has renewed The Baby-Sitters Club for a second season. The news arrives to a collective sigh of relief from longtime fans of the Scholastic series and anyone else who is desperately grasping for shreds of good news to get them through the next week. It’s great to see something so pure survived the odds.

The new season is due to premiere sometime in 2021, which might actually be a relatively attainable goal now that productions are slowly finding ways to return to work amid the still-thriving pandemic. Showrunner and executive producer Rachel Shukert will return for the new season as will series author Ann M. Martin, who serves as a producer. The first season arrived in July to a smattering of appreciative reviews—including ours, which dubbed the series “captivating family TV.” Based loosely on Martin’s popular book series, the show follows Kristy Thomas, Mary Anne Spier, Claudia Kishi, Stacey McGill, Dawn Schafer, and later Jessie Ramsey and Mallory Pike as they attempt to run a successful baby-sitting business in their picturesque town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut.

Sophie Grace, Malia Baker, Momona Tamada, Shay Rudolph, Xochitl Gomez, Anais Lee, and Vivian Watson make up the young starring cast alongside Alicia Silverstone as Kristy’s mother, Elizabeth Thomas Brewer, and Mark Feuerstein as Watson Brewer. Hopefully season two will mark the return of the neighborhood coven of witches.

Web Series News 2020

 Filmmaker Mira Nair has managed to carve a niche for herself thanks to her several acclaimed films, including SALAAM BOMBAY [1988], which is one of the three Indian films that were nominated at the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. She now jumps on the web series bandwagon with A SUITABLE BOY, comprising of a stellar cast. So does Mira Nair manage to succeed once again in impressing viewers with A SUITABLE BOY? Or does she fail this time? Let’s analyse.

A SUITABLE BOY is a tale of four large families and how their life changes for the better and worse thanks to politics, partition and marriage alliances. The year is 1951. Mahesh Kapoor (Ram Kapoor) is a revenue minister in the Purva Pradesh’s Congress government. He resides with his family in a small town named Brahmpur. Mahesh is a secular and a progressive person who wants to pass the zamindari bill for the cause of the small-time farmers. His younger son Maan (Ishaan Khatter) is a good-for-nothing chap who hasn’t yet decided what to do in life. To make matters worse for Mahesh, he falls deeply in love with the courtesan, Saeeda Bai (Tabu). Saeeda too gets besotted by him and both start a romantic relationship. Maan’s elder brother is Pran (Gagandev Riar) who has just got married to Savita (Rasika Dugal). Savita’s sister Lata Mehra (Tanya Maniktala) too shifts with her to Brahmpur to complete her studies at the Brahmpur University. Here, she meets Kabir Durrani (Danesh Razvi) and both fall in love with each other. Lata is aware that he is a Muslim and this factor can cause problems for her. Yet, she can’t help but dream of marrying him. Lata’s conservative mother Rupa (Mahira Kakkar) finds out and she gets a shock of her life. She takes Lata to Calcutta to stay with her son Arun (Vivek Gomber), who resides with his wife Meenakshi (Shahana Goswami), brother Varun (Vivaan Shah) and daughter Aparna (Kavya Menon). In Calcutta, Meenakshi introduces Lata to Amit Chatterji (Mikhail Sen), a famous dashing poet. Amit instantly gets attracted to Lata, much to Rupa’s annoyance. She accelerates her search for a ‘suitable boy’ for Lata for marriage. Her search leads her to Haresh Khanna (Namit Das), a self-made man who has struggled and finally has managed to work in a high position in a shoe company. Haresh too gets interested in Lata. Lata is impressed with both Amit and Haresh but she still loves Kabir and can’t forget him. What happens next forms the rest of the web series.

A SUITABLE BOY is based on Vikram Seth’s novel of the same name. Andrew Davies's adaptation is neat and he tries his best to ensure it’s uncomplicated. Andrew Davies's screenplay is effective at several places. A few scenes are very well scripted and thought of. At places, the narrative could have been shorter and quicker, however. A few developments are difficult to digest. This is especially in some of the later developments in the track of Maan, Saeeda Bai and Firoz (Shubham Saraf), and the track of Rasheed (Vijay Verma). The dialogues are simple, sharp and in old-English style, as its set in the 50s.

Mira Nair's direction (with one episode directed by Shimit Amin) is fine. There are a lot of issues being tackled in the web series but she manages to handle them sensitively. This is especially in the case of the dynamics of the various family members with each other. The communal angle is also very well handled and the bond between Mahesh Kapoor and Nawab Saab (Aamir Bashir) is unique and something that would be lapped up. Though the four families shown hardly intersect with each other, she manages to bind them in some form or the other. This is evident with the fact that Maan, Lata and even Varun are the youngest in their families and are considered black sheep. Also, the way Maan and Lata fall for those whom they shouldn’t be falling for and the way they admit to their parents about it are strikingly similar. On the flipside, a few developments don’t make sense and are added for the heck of it. What exactly was the relevance of Haresh being colour blind? At several points, it is mentioned that a family from Benaras is interested in getting their daughter married to Maan. One expects this angle to unravel when Maan reaches Benaras in the end. Alas, this bit is forgotten at that point! A few characters seem very interesting but they don’t get justice at all. Lastly, Maan and Firoz are hinted to be attracted to each other. This angle is kept open for interpretation but it is sure to leave audiences bewildered.

A SUITABLE BOY consists of just 6 episodes, each of them being around 55-56 minutes long. However, it moves at its own pace and doesn’t have the ‘binge-watch’ quality. The first two episodes, in this regard, make for a tedious watch. With so many characters, it takes a while to understand how they are related to each other. But soon, it gets better and the various dramatic and shocking developments keep viewers hooked. The track of Maan and Saeeda Bai impresses big time and ends on a heartwarming note. Lata’s track takes up the lion’s share of the narrative and though it is a bit unconvincing, it makes for a nice watch. Haresh’s track is sweet and one of the best scenes of the series is when he challenges the bosses at Praha company that he has the ability to make a fine shoe. Then there’s the political and communal angle which has been dealt with sensitively. However, one does expect a bit more fireworks in this context especially towards the end.

A SUITABLE BOY boasts of some excellent performances. Surprisingly, many of them have limited or zero experience in acting before and yet, Mira Nair and Shimit Amin manage to extract fine performances from them. Tanya Maniktala gets the maximum screen time and she is excellent. Right from her screen presence to body language to her understanding of the character, Tanya gets her act right. Ishaan Khatter delivers yet another powerful performance. His scenes with Tabu are one of the best parts about this series. Tabu, too, is dependable as always and takes her character to another level. Ram Kapoor is excellent as the progressive and strict patriarch. Danesh Razvi looks dashing and suits the part. Mikhail Sen too does well and is apt for the role. Namit Das is adorable and he gets totally in to the skin of his character. Mahira Kakkar plays an older character but she does well. Some of her character’s actions and one-liners will seem very annoying but that is intentional. Shahana Goswami is lovely and it’s a pleasure to see her after a long time. Aamir Bashir underplays very well. Shubham Saraf is decent. Vijay Varma is too good. But the manner in which his character suddenly becomes mentally unstable is bizarre. Vivaan Shah is good and adds to the comic quotient. Rasika Dugal doesn’t get much scope. Randeep Hooda (Billy Irani) is wasted. Same goes for Sheeba Chaddha (Kabir’s mother) and Kulbjushan Kharbanda (Dr Kishen Chand Seth). Manoj Pahwa (Raja Of Marh) is a revelation. Ranvir Shorey (Waaris) and Vijay Raaz (Rasheed's father) are memorable. Gagandev Riar, Vivek Gomber, Vinay Pathak (Home Minister Agarwal), Geeta Agrawal Sharma (Mahesh Kapoor's wife), Joyeeta Dutta (Tasneem), Ananya Sen (Kakoli Chatterji), Sharvari Deshpande (Malati), Bugs Bhargava Krishna (Professor Mishra) and Anil Rastogi (Jeweller) leave a mark.

Alex Heffes and Anousha Shankar's music (additional music by Namit Das) is light for most parts and add to the impact. The intro theme is beautiful. Also, special mention should go to Kavita Seth who has sung Saeeda Bai’s songs. Declan Quinn's cinematography is spectacular and captures the locales well. Stephanie Carroll's production design is detailed and straight out of the 50s era. Arjun Bhasin's costumes are also quite authentic. The sarees worn by Tanya Maniktala stand out, especially. VFX is praiseworthy. Nick Fenton's editing is a bit slow and that works in a few scenes. But at places, it might test one’s patience.

On the whole, despite the minuses, A SUITABLE BOY is a fine effort. It was out in July on BBC as a miniseries and ideally, it should have released on Netflix long back. Also, the decision to clash it with the monstrous web series, MIRZAPUR 2 can go against A SUITABLE BOY as the former is bound to steal the thunder, at least in the beginning. But once the initial euphoria around MIRZAPUR 2 subsides, A SUITABLE BOY is sure to find its audience and it’ll be appreciated for its setting, performances, treatment and plot.

Deluxe, the provider of digital and cloud-based distribution services for studios and production companies, appointed Anna Lee — a 12-year veteran of Netflix — to the newly created role of chief strategy officer.

Lee reports directly to Deluxe CEO Cyril Drabinsky. She will be responsible for developing, communicating, executing, and sustaining strategic initiatives for the company.

“Anna is an exceptional leader and her experience in digital cinema, supply-chain workflows, and the global [over-the-top] space will ensure that Deluxe can maximize opportunities given the dramatic shifts in the marketplace,” Drabinsky said in announcing her hire.

Deluxe Entertainment last year emerged from bankruptcy. This June, the company sold the distribution business to private-equity investment firm Platinum Equity. Drabinsky, the former CEO of Deluxe who left the company in 2016 to found CineVizion, returned to the company as chief exec. As part of the deal, CineVizion’s assets were integrated into Deluxe.

Lee joins Deluxe from Netflix, where she most recently served as head of global content services. She joined the company in 2008 as VP, supply chain development, and later became VP of content acquisition, adding the role of head of global screenings in 2019.

In her roles at Netflix, Lee was responsible for creating and implementing systems and frameworks in areas including asset deliverables and technical operations, optimization of operational efficiencies, creation, localization and distribution of content assets in the digital cinema and digital platform spaces.

Before joining Netflix, Lee was SVP of global media markets at Bertelsmann AG and prior to that was director merchandising and member retention at Time Warner. She has a bachelor of science degree in economics from on University of Pennsylvania’s the Wharton School.

Sure, Netflix already put out a trailer for big musical full of movie stars coming out this holiday season today, but does that trailer have Dolly Parton playing an actual literal angel? Then it simply cannot compare. Welcome to Christmas on the Square, which I’m pretty sure someone wrote while doing rails of allspice and watching every single Hallmark movie at once. And just like Dolly, what a blessing this movie appears to be: Christine Baranski plays an evil woman who tries to evict everyone in her town (in song!), Jennifer Lewis is her former best friend who is shocked by this development (in song!), there are various other townspeople who bemoan Christine’s awful business practices (in song!), and America’s calming musical dad Treat Williams shows up at some point (hopefully to do something in song!). Debbie Allen directed Christmas in the Square, which includes lots of dancing and no less than 14 original songs. It’ll premiere on Netflix on November 22.

November signals the earliest beginnings of the holiday season. The time of year when we hunker down at home and snuggle in for some good, diverting entertainment.

This year, more than ever, we could use some holiday cheer and enjoyable content to help us while away the colder days and nights. Luckily, Netflix has a stacked line-up in store for November this year, which includes the highly anticipated fourth season of The Crown, new holiday charmer Dash & Lily, and the Santa sequel The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, featuring Kurt Russell.

Chandigarh, Oct 20 (IANS) Presenting four Bills formulated by his government in the Punjab Assembly to negate the three central farm laws, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday warned of threat to national security peace and asserted that he was prepared to resign or be dismissed rather than bow to "injustice to Punjab's farmers".

Speaking in the Assembly on the second and last day of its special session, he warned of possible disruption in the border state's peace and threat to national security as a result of the central farm laws, pointing out that nobody can tolerate religious hurt and attack on livelihood.

"I am not afraid of resigning. I am not afraid if my government is dismissed. But I will not let the farmers suffer or be ruined," said the Chief Minister, pointing out that he had chosen to quit in the wake of 1984 Operation Blue Star in Harmandar Sahib in Amritsar "instead of accepting or endorsing the assault on Sikh ethos".

Cautioning the Centre against allowing the situation to get out of hand, Amarinder Singh said: "If the farm laws are not revoked, angry youths can come out on the streets to join the farmers, leading to chaos. The way things are going on, the situation has the potential to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in the state."

He said that this is what had happened in the 80s and 90s when Sikh militancy had gripped Punjab.

"Both China and Pakistan will collude and try to take advantage of any disruption in the state's peace, which will pose a serious threat to national security," he added.

"In the name of farming laws, we have actually enacted trade laws. It is not farmers who will have access to a national market, but traders. Hence, the use of term 'trade area' in the so-called farmers legislations is also very telling," said Amarinder Singh. He dubbed the central government action as "legislation by subterfuge".

The Chief Minister said that he was uneasy and upset over the situation and wanted to understand the Centre's decision to what he dubbed "cause such sufferings to the farmers amid the Covid-19 crisis".

Even as he reiterated his full support to the agitating farmers, who he said were left with no option but to fight to save themselves and their families, Amarinder Singh appealed to them to help out Punjab by ending the 'Rail Roko' and road blockades and allow movement of essential commodities.

"We have stood by you; now it is your turn to stand by us," he appealed to the farmers, adding that the entire House was with them even though the state was going through tough times, with power generation at a precarious low, no fertilisers, and no space in godowns for fresh paddy arrivals.

The state Bills, which are part of the state government's "multi-pronged approach to safeguard the interest of farmers and identity of Punjab" by countering the disastrous effects of the central farm laws, seek to amend the Civil Procedure Code, apart from The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.

After Parliament passed three Bills on these issues, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent, following which the government issued a gazette notification on September 27.

The Chief Minister said the seeds of what the state was harvesting at present were sown in 2015 by the Shanta Kumar Committee, which recommended to "explore the possibility of compensating farmers when prices fall below MSP, instead of physically handling large quantities of grains. This will help bring in rationality in procurement operations and bringing back private sector in competition with State agencies in grain procurement".
